Join this five-week beginner quilting class and you'll finish with your own handmade quilt and all the skills needed to confidently embark on your own quilting journey.
Together we'll plan, cut, and piece a modern quilt in the size and fabrics of your choice. You can combine a few blocks into a wall-hanging, placemat, or table runner, or cut many and turn them into a whole quilt! Either way, you'll learn how to accurately cut fabric for quilting, sew (and check) a precise 1/4" seam, chain piece, press for success, match corners, and piece a quilt top. We will then assemble our quilts, baste, quilt, and bind them. You'll get patient, expert guidance and helpful tips every step of the way. Consider yourself warned: quilting is highly addictive!
Dates: Wednesday evenings, 6:30-9 p.m., April 2 - 30, 2025 @ Anthology Studio, 77 Suffolk St. W., Guelph
Cost: $225 - includes pattern but does not include fabric or supplies
Instructor: Becky Swainson (@gather.and.make)
Level: Confident beginner. Requires only basic sewing skills (i.e., threading your machine, winding a bobbin, and sewing a straight line - that's it!). No previous quilting experience necessary.
Supplies: Bring your sewing machine and a basic sewing kit (scissors, pins, thread, seam ripper, etc.). If you already have them, bring a rotary cutter, cutting mat, and acrylic quilting ruler - if not, I have many available in the studio to share. You'll also need:
- A walking foot compatible with your sewing machine (available at Triangle Sewing locally)
- Basting pins
- Quilt batting (in the size required for the quilt size you choose to make - batting should be at least 2" larger on all sides than finished quilt top) Batting is available locally at Triangle Sewing and Len's Mill Store.
-
Fabric - quilting cotton is ideal, but if you'd like to upcycle fabric then thrifted or secondhand bedsheets are a similar weight to quilting cotton and work well for quilts! Sheets (cotton or flannel) are also a great option for your quilt backing fabric.
- Fabric quantity: We'll be constructing our quilt using 5" x 5" squares (which will be 4.5" finished - so a 10 block x 10 block quilt would be 45" square). Fabric quantities for baby and throw size quilts are given in the image carousel of this listing. Or you can do your own math to make a quilt (table runner, wall-hanging, placemats...) of your preferred size! You'll also need fabric for backing and binding (you won't need those until later in the course).
- I'll send out an email after registration with more details on fabric, supplies, and pattern ideas.
