A six-week sewing basics class for big kids ages 9-12

Winter: Wednesdays Feb. 12 - Mar. 26, 2025, 4:15-5:45 p.m. (6 weeks, no class Mar. 12 for March Break), instructor Katherine Heyland

In a warm and welcoming small group setting, we'll learn sewing machine basics and make fun projects along the way to practice fundamentals, grow new skills, and build confidence. Scrunchies, tote bags, pouches, pet bandanas, throw pillows, patchwork quilts, and pyjama pants are all things students have sewn in previous classes.

Kids' classes follow a loosely structured curriculum that emphasizes basic sewing competencies including safety, threading a machine, winding a bobbin, troubleshooting, sewing straight and curved lines, and the basics of following a pattern. That said, classes are largely guided by the interests and inquiries of my young sewists. We decide together which projects to tackle based on class interests and skill level(s), and a lot of our learning happens spontaneously as we work through challenges and projects together. Learning to sew builds confidence and creative skills to last a lifetime!

My goal is for all students (kids and adults alike, in fact) to feel warmly welcomed in a safe and inclusive environment where they can confidently build skills and have fun. We approach learning with a growth mindset: mistakes are expected and welcomed, all learning is celebrated, creativity is fostered, and positive attitudes abound.

Parents/grown-ups are welcome to stay and attend as much of the class(es) as they'd like, or are likewise welcome to drop off and pick up their child at the end of class.

Level: Beginner. No prior machine sewing experience is required! Recommended for ages 9-12.

Your child should bring:
  • A sewing machine (in good working order) and manual, and at least one empty bobbin for your machine
    • A limited number of sewing machine rentals are also available - if you would like to rent a machine, please let me know in advance by email to reserve a machine. The cost is $40 for the 6-week session, payable by etransfer to becky@gatherandmake.ca. With machine rental, thread and all other supplies are provided.
  • Good quality thread
  • A new-ish needle in the machine (Universal 80/12 size is a good one to start with)
  • Optional: Basic sewing kit (if you have one) - scissors or snips, seam ripper, etc. - if students would prefer to use their own. If not, don’t buy anything! I have lots of shared tools available for use in the studio.
  • Fabric and most other supplies will be provided (elastics, stuffing, zippers, snaps, buttons, etc.). I have a huge basket of shared fabric that students are welcome to use throughout the class. If students want something specific, or have their own fabric, they are welcome to bring their own.

Waiver of Liability:

Prior to the first class, please fill out this required WAIVER with your child's information and emergency contact information.
